MAGNETIC THERAPY AS A PHYSIOTHERAPEUTIC TREATMENT FOR PUBALGIA

Magnetic therapy in treatment of pubalgia is used for its anti-inflammatory, regenerative and analgesic effects.

Male are most commonly affected by osteitis pubis, and athletes such as runners and footballers are particularly prone to the injury.

Pubalgia is caused by injury to, tearing of or deterioration of the groin ligaments.

Athletes suffering from Lumbar hyperlordosis and or weakened abdominal muscles tend to suffer from this injury, particularly if the playing field is uneven. Incorrect training with heavy weights, the repetition of badly executed movements, insufficient warm up, and the lack of stretching before and after exercise all contribute to an increase in the number of pubalgia cases amongst athletes.

Low frequency pulsed magnetic therapy is the ideal choice for treating osteitis pubis. It works by relaxing the groin muscles, alleviating the pain, while at the same time increasing the blood flow which has an anti-inflammatory and trophic ffect.

Physiotherapists should concentrate as much on prevention as on the cure for injuries. It’s well worth dedicating a little time and attention to preventing osteitis pubis, rather than a long period of treatment later on. Here are a few examples of how to reduce cases of pubalgia or lessen its effects;

  • Carrying out a training programme with weights specifically tailored to the individual.
  • Warm-up and cool down exercises before and after each training session.
  • Pelvic and groin area stretching exercises.
  • Training and strengthening the abdominal muscles is the key to preventing injury.

Other physiotherapy techniques which can also be of use, besides magnetic therapy:

  • Relaxation techniques
  • Ultrasound
  • Laser therapy
  • Tens
  • Massage
  • Cryotherapy
